Therapeutic Listening is an auditory
program carried out in a clinic or home setting. It uses a
combination of electronically altered music on CD's. The music is
heard through high quality headphones on a portable CD player. The
listening program is individualized for each person. The time for
listening can vary from up to 30 minutes once a day to 30 minutes
twice a day depending on the individualized program. The gains are
maximized when listening occurs on a daily basis. (For further
information about Therapeutic Listening, visit Vital
Sounds.)
We have begun a small
lending library to enable us to loan some of the CD's for the
listening program. This will allow families to try the CDs without
having to purchase them since the newer protocols require changing CDs
more frequently. We require a deposit on the materials and a small
rental fee to cover our expenses, but have begun to develop a core of
the most used CDs to include in this program. We are also exploring
having an option for parents who have purchased CDs that they no
longer use to trade or sell them to other families in the future.
